Cello

Cello lessons

The cello is played seated, with the bow in the right hand and the left hand on the strings. Most students start at eight or older, and an instrument in the right size comes first.

  • A warm-up

Open strings, scales and a few bow strokes to wake up the hands.

  • New material

One new idea for the cello, played slowly and then in a tune.

  • A plan for the week

Your teacher writes what to play at home and how long each piece should take.

What is on offer

  • Lessons of 30, 45 or 60 minutes

  • Private or shared with a friend

  • On weekday afternoons and evenings

Viola

Viola lessons

The viola is a little larger than a violin and plays in a deeper voice. Students start from eight, adults at any age, and your teacher helps you find the right size.

Format

What sets the lesson length and format

  • Age and level

Younger students and first-position players often start with 30 minutes. Longer lessons suit players who prepare pieces.

  • Private or shared

Most lessons are private. Two friends or a parent and child can share a longer lesson when the teacher agrees.

  • Adults

Adult students learn on weekday evenings, at their own pace, and may join the Saturday adult strings group.

At home

What to have at home

Ask your teacher before you buy or rent. Cellos and violas come in sizes, and the right one depends on the player.

  • An instrument in the right size

Your teacher checks the size at the placement visit and again as a student grows.

  • A bow and rosin

A bow that fits the instrument and a cake of rosin to keep it gripping the strings.

  • A chair and a stand

A sturdy chair without arms, and a music stand at eye level.

Start with a placement visit

A teacher listens, we talk about what you hope to play, and we suggest a level and a weekly time.
